"My art, why art? When painting, it is to communicate a creative thought visually, an impulse to follow the energy and make it bear fruit. Sometimes, it is to make known the unknown, while other times, it is to interpret or re-interpret the known into a new or different form."
When I first started painting in the 1980s, I was attracted to expressionism. I liken my style to Neo-Expressionism. However, I was also highly attracted to Impressionism, continuing with Post, Neo-Impressionism, and Fauvism. I loved the colors and bold brush strokes-artists like Vincent van Gogh, Marc Chagall, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and John Russell. Pointillism by Georges Seurat, and Paul Signac.
The current style I place myself in is Magical: Realism, Impressionism, and Expressionism. I say magical realism, which is my favorite genre in literature.
So maybe I'm some contemporary form of fauvism-a Neo-Fauvist (a wild beast.)
I have two periods of painting (1980's - 1990's Click Here)
| (Current period, Click Here). The first period was in the Middle 1980's-1990's. I was initially focused on writing
(Books - Click Here) and turned to painting to help my imaginative mind develop more profound visual metaphors for my prose. I was very experimental and playful about it. I happened to stumble upon the perfect art instructor, Royal Nebeker - a world-renowned painter, printmaker and teacher from the North Coast Oregon 1945 - 2014. (Royal Nebeker - Click here for more info about Royal Nebeker.), an internationally recognized Pacific Northwest artist and teacher.
I attended and participated in Clatsop Community College art classes for four years - the last year and a half, I painted individually under Royal's guidance. The college honors Royal yearly: Royal Nebeker Art Gallery ( Click Here ) .
Royal believed in my art and entered my painting: "Movement is Forever"
(Click Photo), In Oregon's up-and-coming Professional Art Competition where juror Herbert F. Hoover, the owner and director of the Hoover Gallery in San Francisco. Mr. Hoover had a distinguished background in the arts. He served three terms as a member of the California Arts Commission, having been appointed by then-Governor Ronald Reagan.) he selected my paintings as first in paintings and third overall.
After completing all the art classes, I continued on my own with Royal's help; I found a niche to place my work in Neo-Expressionism and metaphorical Expressionism, which mirrored my interests in writing Magical Realism. Royal encouraged me to continue in the visual arts.
The second period is current, starting in 2023 -> (Paintings)
